Notes are for biographical
information about the person, such as—religious affiliation, political
affiliation, size of the farm, etc.
Sources are used to document
where you found the information.

Creating a Source
Source Selection Buttons
1. Individual sources – If the source doesn’t
apply to a specific event.
2. “S” to the right of the events – If the
sources applies to a specific events.
Double click on the “S” -- 2
options
1. Use a source already created.
2. Create a new source.
Source Template contains
three sections:
1. Source description
2. Repository
3. Citation Details
Source Description
The most important field on
the source template is the Source Title.
The source title list will be alphabetical, so the title should be
composed in such a way that it will appear on the list where you would expect
it to appear.
Methods -- Your method must
be consistent. You could use more than
one method.
1. Type of Document – Census, Family Records.
2. Geographical Area – State, Country.
3. Surname – Harrison, James: Bible Records
4. Title of the Published Book
Author
Name of author, editor,
compiler, agency or institution that created the document.
Format for author section –
always enter surname first, followed by given names separated by commas. It the author is an editor or compiler, then
specify that after the name.
Miles, Stevens; editor
If an agency created a
record, index, or database list as follows;
Vital Statistics, Department of: California, Sacramento
New Hampshire, Sullivan County: Probate Court
Publication Information
This is the place of
publication and the date. If the source
is an article, name the periodical. If
the items are unpublished, enter the form of the record, such as—a certificate,
microfilm, photocopy, CD-ROM, funeral program, etc.
Repository
Where did you see the
information—library, archive, government agency or a person’s home? If the item was viewed at out Family History
Center and not borrowed from the Salt Lake Family History Library then list the
Center’s address.
Call Number
If a film, enter the film
number and item number.
If a book, enter the Dewey
Decimal number from the spine of the book.
If Internet, enter the web
address.
Actual Text
Enter any actual text that
applies to the source as a whole.
Comments
In this section you can list
anything about the source that would have influenced your evaluation of the
information, such as—poor filming, many records were torn and weathered, entire
record very legible, this is a transcript or this is a extraction.
Selecting a Source
Locate the source on the
Source List. Double Click and the
source will be connected to event you have selected and a window will appear
with the source information at the top.
At the bottom of the window is the Citation Detail that needs to be
filled in.
Film/Volume/Page
In this space you enter the
specifics as to where you located the information in the record.
Date record was made
This is the original date the
records was made. Sometimes the date
can not be determined.
Actual Text Button
This button will bring up a
window where the actual text can be typed.
Image Button
You can connect a scanned
image of the document.
Comments:
Any contradiction to the
other sources is entered in this space, such as:
This sources lists the year of birth as 1921.
Editing Individual Window
In the Edit Individual Window
on the right hand side are four buttons:
1. Notes—signified by a notepad and pencil—clicking on
this button open the note page and information can be entered here.
2. Sources—signified by an open book—clinking on this
button allows you view the sources you have entered. You cannot correct or change anything source from this page.
3. Address—signified by a pencil and envelope—clinking on
this button allows you enter the address of the individual you have selected.
4. Multimedia—signified by a camera—clinking on this
button allows you to connect scanned images and photo to the individual.
